In a recent study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, researchers from King’s College London analyzed data from 4,182 COVID patients who logged their symptoms in the COVID Symptom Study app. Out of those patients, 558 had symptoms that lasted 28 days or more, which is considered long COVID. Moreover, 189 had symptoms for eight weeks or more, and 95 had them for 12 weeks or more. According to the study, there were five symptoms during the first week that were most predictive of long COVID in patients: fatigue, headache, difficulty breathing, hoarse voice, and muscle pain. Having one of these symptoms, however, wouldn’t necessarily be a problem. Researchers concluded that more than 16 percent of those with more than five symptoms during the first week of the virus went on to have long COVID. According to the study, the number of symptoms was the strongest risk factor of long COVID for all age groups and sexes. The study pointed to other risk factors for long COVID, including age and gender, with older individuals and women more likely to be affected. And while certain early symptoms were predictive of a long COVID case, there were also specific symptoms that were more commonly reported by those in the later stages of a long-term coronavirus infection.
